Group trip to Montego Bay

How to plan a group trip to Montego Bay
The honest guide for 2026

Jamaica is the most requested group trip destination in the Caribbean. Montego Bay is the entry point for most crews. This is what actually works: all-inclusive vs villa, what Carnival really costs, and how to get everyone there without the chaos.

The real appeal

Montego Bay is not just a
vacation. For a lot of crews, it is a tradition.

Jamaica does something to people. The food, the music, the warmth of the people you meet there, the pace of a place that refuses to be rushed. For Caribbean diaspora communities especially, a trip to Montego Bay is not just tourism. It is connection to something. And doing it with your crew amplifies everything about it.

The challenge is that Montego Bay group trips have a reputation for being deceptively hard to plan. The all-inclusive question creates friction. The flight situation from multiple cities creates complexity. The budget conversations get awkward. This guide cuts through all of that.

When to go

Jamaica Carnival in April is the
peak event. Here is the honest picture.

Jamaica Carnival (April) is the anchor event for many diaspora group trips and it is genuinely spectacular. The road march, the fetes, the energy of the whole week. But April in Jamaica is also high-demand, meaning accommodation and flights need to be booked months in advance. December and January are also peak with strong New Year's energy.

For groups who want Jamaica without the festival crowds, September and October are underrated. Fewer tourists, similar weather, lower prices across accommodation and flights.

Planner note: If you are going for Jamaica Carnival, costume band registration opens months before the event and closes before most people realise it has opened. Get the group committed and registered early. Missing the costume window is the most common planner regret on Carnival trips.
Where to stay

All-inclusive vs villa: the
question every group asks first

This is genuinely the most important decision for a Montego Bay group trip. All-inclusives are convenient and remove a lot of the budget uncertainty. Villas give you more space, more privacy, and a shared home base that changes the group dynamic in a good way. The right answer depends on your group.

Best for convenience

All-inclusive (Sandals, Hyatt, Secrets)

Fixed cost, food included, no planning for meals. Ideal for groups that want maximum relaxation with minimal logistics.

Best for group bonding

Private villa (Rose Hall area)

Your own space, a pool, a kitchen for late nights. More flexibility and usually better value for groups of eight or more.

Best for Carnival

Near Freeport or Downtown MoBay

Proximity to Carnival events matters. Being thirty minutes from the road march start is a different experience than being five minutes away.

Budget range

$150 to $350 per person for 7 nights

For a shared villa. All-inclusives vary widely but typically run $200 to $400 per person per night depending on the property.

What to actually do

Beyond the resort: what your
crew will actually remember

The Luminous Lagoon in Falmouth is one of those experiences that genuinely delivers on its promise. Bioluminescent water at night, boat tours, the kind of thing that everyone in the group talks about years later. Book in advance for larger groups.

Dunn's River Falls near Ocho Rios is the classic for a reason. It is a full-body group experience, climbing waterfalls together, and it works at any fitness level. Worth the drive from MoBay for a day trip.

For food, miss the resort buffet at least once and get Scotchies jerk chicken in Montego Bay. It is one of the best things you will eat in the Caribbean. Also worth finding a local spot for ackee and saltfish at breakfast if your villa has flexibility in the morning.

The money conversation

What a Montego Bay group trip
actually costs

Flights: Sangster International Airport (MBJ) has direct connections from New York, Miami, Atlanta, Toronto, and London. Budget $400 to $800 round trip from the US East Coast, $700 to $1,000 from the UK. Prices rise significantly for Carnival week in April.

Accommodation: $150 to $350 per person for a villa split across eight people for seven nights. All-inclusives add food and drinks to that cost but remove the per-meal variable.

Carnival (if applicable): Costume registration $200 to $600. Fete tickets $100 to $400 per person depending on events. This is where the budget conversation is most critical because costs vary widely based on what the group decides to attend.

Activities and transport: $50 to $150 per person per day for activities, day trips, and local transport.

The group budget conversation on Montego Bay trips often centres on the all-inclusive question. Some people want it included in the price. Others want flexibility. Get alignment on this before you book anything because it determines the entire accommodation strategy.

Getting there

Multi-city arrivals and
what to plan ahead

Sangster is well-run and arrivals are generally smooth. The challenge for group trips is coordinating pickups when people are arriving at different times on different flights. Sort this before you land. A pre-arranged van for the group is almost always worth the cost over individual taxis, both in price and in the experience of arriving together.

On visas: Most nationalities get visa-free entry to Jamaica for up to 90 days. Confirm individually based on each person's passport. Jamaican nationals and those with Jamaican heritage should check their specific entry requirements.
For the planner

The thing that makes or
breaks a Jamaica group trip

Jamaica trips live and die on the accommodation decision. Get a villa if you can. The shared space, the pool at midnight, the communal meals, the ability to decompress together without having to go anywhere. These things change the texture of the trip. All-inclusives are fine but they create a different dynamic. People disperse to different pools and restaurants and you lose the group cohesion that makes the trip what it is.

The second thing: confirm your headcount hard and early. Jamaica Carnival especially requires knowing exactly how many people are in before you register for costumes and book accommodation. A group of six and a group of ten have completely different budget and logistics profiles. Know which one you are planning for.
