For the friend holding the receipts at the end of every trip. Add the people, add what each person paid, untick anyone who sat an expense out, and get one clean list of who pays whom. No download, no sign-up, no app.

One row per expense. Split between is everyone by default. Untick anyone who was not part of that expense.
Share means each person's fair part of the costs they were included in. Balances net out to zero across the group, always.
This page settles one trip, one time, after the fact, from whatever receipts you remembered to type in. That is the best any standalone calculator can do.
Inside TripCircle, the splitting happens while the trip is still going. Every expense anyone adds is split the moment it is added. Everyone watches the same balances, live. And it all sits next to the plan itself: the itinerary, the costs, and the people, in one place. Nobody has to be the group accountant, and nobody gets a surprise bill at the airport.
Use this calculator to clean up the last trip. Use TripCircle so the next one never needs cleaning up.

Split every shared cost evenly among the people who took part in it, and keep personal costs personal. At the end, compare what each person paid against their total share. The people who paid less than their share pay the people who paid more, and the group is even. That is exactly the math this calculator runs.
They should not pay for it. Untick their name on that expense and their share is calculated only across the people who joined. Fair does not mean everyone pays the same total. It means everyone pays for what they were actually part of.
Net everyone out first, then settle with direct payments between the people who owe and the people who are owed. Done this way, a group rarely needs more payments than there are people in it. Paying every expense back one by one is how groups end up sending twenty small payments back and forth.
Either works, as long as every cost is recorded in one place from day one. Trips get messy when receipts live in five different phones and someone has to reconstruct the weekend from memory. One person booking makes settling simple, but only if the record is shared.
Share the breakdown, not a demand. When everyone can see the same list of expenses and the same math, the conversation is about numbers, not trust. A clear settle-up list with each person's share shown is the difference between a quick payment and an awkward week.
